Windows Server 2019 Essentials: a server for the small office

For an office with only a few employees, the full Standard edition plus an access license for every user can be overkill. Windows Server 2019 Essentials is the simple, affordable answer: a real Windows Server for shared files, printers, domain and applications, with one license for everyone. The installation is in English.

What the Essentials edition is

Essentials is the Windows Server edition for very small businesses. It supports up to 25 users and 50 devices and, unlike Standard and Datacenter, does not require separate access licenses (CALs) for users. You buy one license and the whole office is covered, as long as you stay within the limits.

What you can do

• Domain controller (Active Directory) for central management of users and passwords.
• File and print server with per-user access rights.
• Application hosting, such as accounting or CRM software.
• Windows Admin Center for easy browser-based management.

Things to keep in mind

• If the business grows beyond 25 users or 50 devices, you will need to move to Standard with CALs.
• The 2019 edition no longer includes the Essentials Experience role (the dashboard of older versions). Management uses the standard Windows Server tools.

Support

Windows Server 2019 receives security updates until January 2029.

Installation and activation

1. After payment you receive the product key by email.
2. Install the server from an official Microsoft ISO image, on physical hardware or a virtual machine.
3. Enter the key during setup or later in the activation settings.

If you have already installed the Evaluation edition, convert it to the full version without reinstalling, from an elevated command prompt:
