Windows Server 2025 Datacenter, Lifetime License
Windows Server 2025 Datacenter: unlimited virtualisation
The Datacenter edition of Windows Server 2025 is built for environments where one physical server hosts many virtual machines. With a license covering all cores, you can run unlimited Windows Server virtual machines, making it the most cost-effective option for large-scale virtualisation.
What it adds over Standard
- Unlimited Windows Server virtual machines on the licensed server.
- Storage Spaces Direct: hyper-converged storage using local drives in a cluster.
- Storage Replica without the Standard limits, for replicating data to a second site.
- Software-Defined Networking for virtual networks and central traffic management.
- Shielded Virtual Machines that protect VMs even from host administrators.
Plus everything new in Windows Server 2025
Next-generation Active Directory, SMB over QUIC, improved NVMe performance, GPU partitioning in Hyper-V, hotpatching via Azure Arc and the Windows 11 interface. Security support runs until 2034.
Per-core licensing
The Standard and Datacenter editions are licensed per physical processor core, with a minimum of 8 cores per processor and 16 cores per server. The base 16-core license covers most small and medium business servers. If your server has more physical cores, additional licenses are needed to cover them all. If you are unsure, ask us before you buy.
When Datacenter pays off
As a rule of thumb, if you plan to run more than roughly 10 to 12 Windows Server virtual machines on the same server, Datacenter costs less than multiple Standard licenses. It is also required if you need Storage Spaces Direct or SDN.
Minimum requirements
- 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor with SSE4.2, POPCNT and virtualisation support
- 2 GB RAM (far more in practice for a VM host), 32 GB storage
- Gigabit network adapter, UEFI and TPM 2.0
Installation and activation
- After payment you receive the product key by email.
- Install the server from an official Microsoft ISO image, on physical hardware or a virtual machine.
- Enter the key during setup or later in the activation settings.
If you have already installed the Evaluation edition, convert it to the full version without reinstalling, from an elevated command prompt:
DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula
Under Microsoft terms, each user or device accessing the server also needs a Windows Server access license (CAL), in addition to RDS CALs where Remote Desktop Services are used.
